The holiday season is shaping up to be busy at Southlake Mall, Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, River Oaks Center, Porter’s Vale, Highland Grove and other area retail destinations.

Strong retail sales in November show this holiday season could set a new record despite the pandemic, supply chain disruptions and rising inflation.

Retail sales rose 0.3% in November from October and 18.2% year-on-year, according to the US Census Bureau.

“Despite the headwinds in the economy, retail sales data for November confirms that consumers continue to spend, as evidenced by a 14% increase in year-over-year sales,” said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation. “We expect demand to remain strong through December, even as consumers started shopping for the holiday season earlier than ever this year. Despite the rise of the omicron variant, rising vaccination rates combined with ongoing retail safety protocols and procedures have given consumers the feeling that they can continue to shop safely and conveniently. We believe holiday sales this year could increase by up to 11.5% from 2020. ”

The pandemic has benefited retailers as consumers spend more on things than on experiences since the COVID hit. Retail sales have increased year over year every month since June 2020.
