Malaysia’s wholesale and retail sales hit a record high of RM118.1 billion in November 2021


KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wholesale and retail sales in November 2021 registered the highest level on record, rising 7.0% year-on-year to RM118.1 billion, surpassing the level of the previous month of RM116.2 billion, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase was attributed to the wholesale trade sub-sector, which recorded a positive growth of 6.8% or RM3.6 billion to register 56.3 billion RM in November 2021.

“Retail also increased by 6.7% or RM3.0 billion to reach RM47.8 billion. During the same period, motor vehicles increased by 8.6% or 1, RM1 billion to reach RM13.9 billion,” he said in a report on the wholesale and retail trade performance released today.

For a month-over-month comparison, he said the value of wholesale and retail sales rose 1.6%, supported by the reopening of various economic sectors and interstate travel to from October 11.

Regarding the performance of the sub-sectors, Mohd Uzir said that the growth of the wholesale trade sub-sector of 6.8% in November 2021 was supported by other specialized wholesalers, which increased by 7.6% or RM1.6 billion to reach RM22.1 billion.

“This was followed by wholesale food, drink and tobacco with 11.2% for a record RM11.4 billion,” he said.

Similarly, he said the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals also increased by 15.5 percent to RM4.7 billion, due to rising commodity prices.

“For a monthly comparison, sales in this sub-sector increased by 1.0%,” he explained.

On the retail sub-sector, he said the 6.7% increase was attributed to retail sales at non-specialty stores, which recorded an increase of 9.9% or 1.6 billion dollars. RM to RM17.7 billion.

At the same time, other groups within this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales of automotive fuels (18.2%), retail sales of household goods (6.4%), retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco (9.1%). , retail sales not in stores, stalls or markets (28.4 per cent), retail sales of cultural and recreational goods (4.5 per cent), retail sales of information and communication equipment (0.8 percent) and retail sales in stalls and markets (11.6 percent).

However, he also said retail sales at specialty stores remained negative for a sixth consecutive month at -1.0%.

“As a monthly comparison, retail trade grew 3.4%, with all groups in this sub-sector posting positive growth,” he said.

Additionally, Mohd Uzir said the 8.6% growth in the motor vehicle subsector for the month was attributed to motor vehicle sales, which continued their double-digit growth of 11.8% or 0. RM.9 billion to RM8.1 billion. .

Motorbike sales, maintenance and repair followed with 9.4% for a record RM1.2 billion.

Similarly, sales of motor vehicle parts and accessories and motor vehicle maintenance and repair rebounded to post positive growth of 2.9% and 4.0%, respectively.

“However, on a month-to-month basis, sales for this subsector declined -1.9%, led by motor vehicle sales which recorded -10.4%,” he said.

Mohd Uzir said the Internet Retail Sales Index recorded a year-on-year growth of 21.0% (October 2021: 20.7%), while for the seasonally adjusted value the index increased by 5 .4% compared to the previous month.

In terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade recorded annual growth of 2.9 percent.

He added that the expansion was attributed to motor vehicles, which rose 5.2%, followed by retail trade at 3.3%.

Similarly, wholesale trade also registered a positive growth of 1.4%, while the seasonally adjusted volume index rose 1.6% month-on-month. – Bernama
